Prof. Kevin Erwin, DeTao Master of Ecological Restoration invited to give speech on environmental protection and development at Luneng Group Global Strategic Cooperation Conference

By DeTao Studio Erwin of Ecological Restoration
September, 2015

On Sept.20th, 2015, as invited, Prof. Kevin Erwin, DeTao Master of Ecological Restoration, has attended Luneng Group Global Strategic Cooperation and New Product Release Conference for Wenchang Shanhaitian Project, and has given a talk during the conference.

In the conference, Luneng Group has released its strategic development plan and their new real estate product Shanhaitian in Wenchang, Hainan. As an internationally known wetland ecologist, Certified Senior Ecologist by Ecological Society of America, Prof. Kevin Erwin was invited to give a talk in the conference. He pointed out that in Shanhaitian Project, Luneng has the resolution to be the first to incorporate his concept of ecological conservation and restoration into project development, which will help Luneng to set a new standard for future sustainable development and conservation in China. He said, “Environment is a huge economic driver, but can also be a detriment if the work is not done correctly”. Taking Shanhaitian Project as an example, to make sure a “win-win” situation can be reached, Prof. Kevin Erwin has introduced the international definition of “ecotourism” defined by IUCN and TNC to the project as a guidance. What Prof. Kevin Erwin did has set a bigger challenge for Luneng Group, but it will also help Luneng to be able to get and maintain a sustainable ecosystem and better regional economics for local people.

After the conference, Prof. Kevin Erwin has been interviewed by China Real Estate Business. He said many problems that China is facing right now, including wetland degradation, air pollution, and water pollution, are very similar to what happened in the US fifty years ago. He believes China can take shorter time to restore the environment because the technology has been developed in the past decades. For Shanhaitian Project, he has used international standard of ecotourism and ecological protection during the planning, which will be a challenge for Luneng, but will also be a good opportunity for Luneng being an industry leader.

In the Cocktail Party after the conference, Prof. Kevin Erwin had an intensive communication with Mr. Lan Hai, the Vice General Manager of Luneng Group, and Wenchang Wetland Park project team members. Mr. Lan said he appreciated Prof. Erwin’s contribution in this project, and is looking forward to more collaboration activities in the future.

Prof. Kevin Erwin has been involved in Wenchang Shanhaitian Wetland Park Project since April 2015. In his last trip to Wenchang in July, he has prepared a conceptual plan for the wetland park to restore the mangrove, the associated ecosystem, and the habitat. Now the drawings have been submitted for further review and permission.
