Program Introduction

Product Design (Strategic Design and Innovation) will be led by Prof. Hartmut Esslinger, DeTao Master of Strategic Design, who is the founder of the world's most prestigious strategy design company "frog" and professor of University for Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria. The program will be jointly taught by the international teaching team built by Prof. Esslinger and domestic teaching team from SIVA(Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts).

Training Goals

The over-arching goal of our special undergraduate course in Strategic Design and Innovation (SDI) is to break through the art based design of China's traditional teaching method to cultivate students who are of capabilities of strategic design concept and professional design skills to become entrepreneurs, executives and leaders in the fields of China's technology and education.

Curriculum Description

All teaching is focused around technology-focused projects, which can be strictly educational (skills exercises) or more reality-driven (workshops with companies and institutions).

Theoretical elements of the curriculum are embedded into special lectures and seminars, and on the practical side, as all projects include 3-dimensional studies and representations in the form of visual models, functional prototypes as well as conceptual simulations of user scenarios.

Selection of students

During three days of entrance examination, candidates will engage in a “quick project” by designing an everyday object. This test will give the candidates the opportunity to prove their ability to think and act creative, show their talent and demonstrate how to improve after given feedback and advice from the teachers.
