DeTao Master of Ecological Restoration, Prof. Kevin Erwin November Trip Summary

DeTao Master of Ecological Restoration, Prof. Kevin Erwin has visited Shanghai and Beijing from Nov. 3th to Nov. 15th, 2015. During his visit, he and his studio staff have had extensive communications and exchanges with colleagues and clients in China from top enterprises, NGOs, institutes, and universities. The studio is moving forward to create water resource ecosystem concept under DeTao umbrella, and has made progress through discussions with other masters, colleagues, (potential) clients, and university partners.

EC Meeting with DeTao Leaders

In this trip, Prof. Kevin Erwin had an EC meeting with DeTao leaders Chris Xu, and Jared Man to have a review of the studio’s development this year, and the plan of next phase.

Workshop on Water Resource Ecosystem Institute Concept

Currently, China is experiencing significant environmental issues especially water resource issues. These conditions parallels the environmental condition in the US prior to the 1970’s. After 1970 the passage of environmental laws required new technologies to be developed to improve environmental conditions and people’s lives and livelihoods. As a consequence many new businesses were developed to generate significant economic value to the private sector and these profits continue to be made today. China will soon embark on a similar path of promoting environmental protection with the government and the people demanding improved environmental conditions and reliable, clean, non-threatening water resources. The Water Resource Ecosystem Institute will be a diversified platform that integrates China’s top universities, most respected state corporations, respected NGOs and government agencies together to collect and distribute knowledge by providing education and products focusing on the wide range of water resource issues.

With this mission and vision, Prof. Erwin had several rounds of communications with professors, DeTao Masters, and other working group members. Prof. Jin Yan and Prof. Roger Christiansen have contributed valuable and practical ideas from their perspective to this concept, including the business model and the branding strategy. Prof. Erwin also has shared this concept with institute partners, university partners, and potential clients to have a better understanding of China’s market and to hear ideas from people in this field. After the discussion with Dr. Xie Yan from IOZ CAS, with Beijing Forestry University, and with Luneng Group, the concept of WREI has got many support, and is becoming much clearer in its operation model, network, and launching schedule.

Collaboration with Luneng Group

In this trip, Prof. Erwin had a second meeting with Luneng Group in Beijing. Mr. Lan Hai (General Manager of Luneng Group) has attended the meeting and had an in-depth discussion with Prof. Erwin. At beginning of the meeting, Prof. Erwin took Wenchang Wetland Park and his projects in the US as examples to introduce his concept of “Design with Nature”. Inspired by Prof. Erwin’s concept, Mr. Lan further showed his interests in being involved in WREI, and proposed that Luneng will support this concept as much as possible. Mr. Lan Hai said he appreciated what Prof. Kevin Erwin does for China’s ecological health, and he hopes Luneng can do something to change the real estate development paradigm in China.

After the meeting, Prof. Kevin Erwin was invited to visit the two project sites of Luneng in Tongzhou, Beijing and Wen’an Hebei with the project teams. Although the weather was cold in the field, the project teams and Prof. Erwin had a very active discussion on man-made lake location, designing, and engineering.

Prof. Kevin Erwin Giving Lecture at School of Nature Conservation, Beijing Forestry University

On Nov. 10th, 2015, Prof. Kevin Erwin, DeTao Master of Ecological Restoration, was invited by Prof. Lei Guangchun (Dean of School of Nature Conservation, BJFU) to give a lecture on Wetland Restoration in China: Future Opportunities and Challenges. Prof. Erwin and the leaders and professors from the School then had e meeting on future collaboration. Vice President of DeTao Group, Regina Wang, has attended the lecture and the meeting after that.

Lecture to SIVA Students

Invited by Prof. Haim Dotan (DeTao Master of Ecological Architecture Designing), Prof. Erwin has given a lecture on “Water is Life” for the undergraduate students majoring in ecological architecture designing in SIVA. Prof. Kevin Erwin started with the water resource issues in China to tell the students how important and urgent the water issues are in China, and used his project in Florida as a good example to show how the concept of “designing with nature” works and succeeds. The students showed great passion on Prof. Erwin’s projects, and asked many questions on water pollution treatment and waterfront architecture designing.
