Synopsis

A group of human-like butterflies lived in the dim ruins – the end of the world. They admired the glitz and glamour of the human world and were eager to turn into humans at any cost. Their chief married the prettiest female of them, Zhu Yingtai, to a human, in the hope of turning their butterfly peers into real human. The poet butterfly, Liang Shanbo, attended this unusual wedding, claiming the bride. This uninvited guest caused a stir at the wedding. Liang presented a poem to the bride as a wedding gift. The two hearts were interlinked by the fine poem, inspiring their affection towards each other. However, a sentimental girl fell in love with Liang. Seeing that the wedding was doomed to failure, the butterfly chief tricked the girl with a cup of poisonous wine, telling her that it could help win the heart of her beloved once he drank it. But she failed to resist the temptation of the wine and sipped it. That was indeed a lethal sip that cost her life but freed her beloved one. She turned into a butterfly, fluttering in the world of human-like butterflies.

Ashamed into anger, the butterfly chief accused Liang of the murder. The butterflies were ready to identify themselves as accomplices as long as they stood a chance to turn into human. The soul of the dead girl was the only one defending Liang. The butterfly chief sentenced her to death by fire. She sacrificed her life again, this time as a butterfly, for her beloved and her friend, Zhu, securing her eternal love. She ignited her wings in the flame, reduced to ashes eventually. Liang and Zhu were committed to their love, regardless of their identities, either as butterfly or as human. They escaped from the siege of flame and were reborn in Nirvana. Fluttering their wings, they danced in pair and sang in praise of their love.
